Principal's Desk

Dr. Pankaj Kumar Debnath is a distinguished academician as well as academic administrator and the current Principal of Cooch Behar College, Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India. Dr. Debnath has an extensive academic background, having completed his Madhyamik Pariksha in 1980 and Higher Secondary in 1982, both from the West Bengal Education Boards. He earned his B.A. (Honours) in Economics from the University of North Bengal in 1985, followed by an M.A. in Economics, where he graduated first in his class in 1987. Further enhancing his expertise, he completed his M. Phil. in Economics from the same university in 1990 and earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Arunachal University in 1999.
Dr. Debnath's professional journey began as a Lecturer-in-Economics at Govt. College, Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh, in 1991. He later served at Arunachal University (presently Rajib Gandhi Central University) and Cooch Behar College, where he was promoted to Reader-in-Economics. Since April 2008, he has been leading Cooch Behar College as Principal. His professional contributions are vast, including serving as a trained NAAC assessor, member of various academic and administrative bodies, and coordinator for multiple programs and committees. He has been also assigned the responsibility of State NAAC mentor of West Bengal. His research and scholarly works include peer-reviewed publications on topics such as Conventional Religion among Tribes in Arunachal Pradesh, the Cooperative Movement in NEFA, and agricultural modernization in Eastern Himalayas. Additionally, he has authored and edited books focusing on the economy of Arunachal Pradesh and North Bengal.
Dr. Debnath has been actively involved in numerous academic projects and has a notable presence in academic and administrative circles. His ongoing commitment to education, research, administration is evident from his participation as resource persons in various national seminars, workshops, and his roles in academic governance and quality assurance. Future Plans
Without compromising on its reputation as one of the foremost district colleges for imparting under graduate as well as post graduate education in commerce, humanities, science and management the college is fast gearing itself to meet the changing demands of education. We are planning to introduce Honours Courses in Education, General Course in Zoology & Botany in addition to opening of MBA Programme and other P.G Courses.

Insfrastructure
The Institute has 24hrs free WIFI campus of total area 3.74 acres .The buildings comprises of twenty- Eight spacious (28) class rooms , fourteen modern (14) Laboratories, one Central Library Building, a well decorated Seminar Hall with seating capacity 0f 100, and six (06) administrative rooms including one for Netaji Subhas Open University Study Centre(NSOU study centre), one for NSS(NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME) unit, one for BBA (BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION)section ,one for BBM(BACHELOR OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT) Section, one room allocated for IQAC(Internal Quality Assurance Cell) section, and one for COP(CAREER ORIENTED PROGRAMMING) courses. A Lush Green Playground in the middle of the campus has enhanced the beauty of the institution. Apart from that College has a full-fledged multi-gymnasium with the fund from the local MLA and MPs. The Central Library OPAC (ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOGUE) system which gives facility to the students and the teachers to search for the books whether those are available in the library or not and also it provides separate reading rooms for the faculties and the students. The college has Principal’s Room adjoining the office room, one spacious Room for the Faculties, one room for the Accounting Section, a server room, a room for the Students’ Union office ,a Girls’ Common Room and a Boys’ Common Room. It has introduced College App named “COOCH BEHAR COLLEGE APP” for the benefit of the students as well as the employers also. The college has total teaching strength 81 among which 5 are Associate Professors, 27 are Assistant Professors, 40 are SACT(State-Aided College Teachers) and 7 are Contractual Guest Faculties . The Institutional office works are carried out very efficiently by 22 Non-Teaching Staffs. The college has classrooms, separate laboratories for the Department of Geography, Department Physics, Department Chemistry, Department Mathematics, Department Computer Science, BBA & BBM. Despite many constraints, the college is trying hard to provide modern technological aids for knowledge and enhancement with the help of UGC fund. This website has been launched in 2006 for providing information about the college. The website has been revised and replaced in 2020. The combined efforts will help to build an image of the institution.
The institute plans to extend the existing building within the near future for housing and auditorium. The college has classrooms, separate laboratory for Geography, Physics, Chemistry & Computer Science each. The college has separate library building along with reading room facility and some more classrooms and also a full-fledged multi-gymnasium with the fund from the local MLA and MPs. The college authorities have already applied to them for financial assistances.
Despite many constraints, the college is trying hard to provide modern technological aids for knowledge and enhancement with the help of UGC fund. The institute has purchased a photocopy machine and an overhead projector, a TV set a public address system and video cassette recorder etc for the benefit of the students. The process of computerization of the library has already been started. The college also introduced new software for complete automation in official and academic tasks. The members of two office staffs are encouraged to achieve computer skill while giving them flexible work scheduled and financial support. The institute has internet facility with six (06) terminals for the staff and students. A website has been launched in 2006 for providing information about the college. The website has been revised and replaced in 2009. The combined efforts will help to build an image of the institution.
